Oscar Wilde...My New Literary Best Friend!

I am absolutely intrigued by Osacar Wilde! His way of life, his writings, his approach on gender identity. his advocacy for socialism and his unconventional forms of expessions! He is indeed my "new literary best friend."

I'll leave you here with some inspiring quotes from "The Importance of Being Earnest":

"I don't see anything romantic in proposing. It is very romantic to be in love. But there is nothing romantic about definite proposal. Why, one may be accepted. One usually is, I believe. Then the excitement is all over. The very essence of romance is uncertainity. If ever I get married, I'll certainly try to forget the fact"

"When one is in town one amuses oneself. When one is in the country one amuses other people. It is excessively boring"

"On the contrary, Aunt Augusta, I've now realised for the first time in my life the vital Importance of being Earnest"

Is 'sex' still a taboo subject?

Sue Johanson is back on her campus tour again! Which brings to mind, is "sex" still a taboo subject? Or is it something that we can freely talk about nowadays? I mean, Sue Johanson surely does! But I don't know, I personally feel that sex is still very much a taboo and "hush" "hush" topic.

I, unfortunately, have had the opportunity to attend an all-girls Catholic high school and we sure DID NOT discuss the subject of sex at all, rather we reduced sex to "abstinence."

Thoughts?

Religious Studies 101

I'm currently taking a course entitled "Potraits of Jesus." Today my T.A. proposed the question: Who is Jesus to you? About 15 out of 20 people in the tutorial responded "I am Christian and Jesus is my Saviour." I didn't know what to think when I heard that phrase articulated over and over again. I guess I was shocked; after all I was in an academia university setting.

"Jesus is my Saviour".....really?! If Jesus is your so-called "Saviour", then I would expect you to come up with a more personal response about who he is to you, instead of regurgiitating the words of your fellow classmates, who in turn plagiarized their pastors' weekly sermons.

Tutorial will be interesting.

Skinny Jeans and Uggs and all the above...

Number 1: "big-boned" girls should NOT wear skinny jeans! I don't care if the 80's are coming back with the vengeance, please just stop wearing them!

Number 2: Why am I seeing Uggs already?!?! It's not even fall yet. Not that I would like to see them in the fall or winter for that matter. Uggs - can we please start a new trend of some sort?!?!?! I've had to look at those UGLY things for the past 4 yrs....I don't know, start the "sock and sandal" trend in the middle of winter, I don't care, just anything but those Uggs again........

Back to Reality

What a surreal summer that was! Now that it is about to end, I'm celebrating it with a week long trip to NYC! I'm super excited and counting down the days! 8 more to go....

I'm going to end my short simple blog right here...because I fear that writing more will only ruin this moment of ecstasy!

$19.32

After just 5 short minutes of discussion with the library manager, she waved the $19.32 on my library account.

My response to one of her staff members falsely accusing me of my "imaginary dog" ruining one of the library books was as follows:

1) I felt extremely offended that one of your staff members would make such an accusation as your "dog" chewed one of the books....I made it clear that I didn't even own a dog!...she apologized on behalf of her staff member for the accusation.

2) I checked the library book out myself and if I thought that there would a possibility of a fine place on my library card, then obviously I would have brough it up to one of the staff members...I also made it clear that I used to work for the Toronto Public Library for 3 years as a Page and the ONLY time we did not allow a patron to check out a book was 1) the pages were literally falling out 2) the cover was falling off....the expression on her face told me that she was SHOCKED that I used to work for the public library and that I knew about book checking policies.

3) I also decided to mention to her that I am indeed an ENGLISH MAJOR and that I take extreme care of all of my books. I do not write in them, not even with pencil, nor do I highlight my book, let alone destroy the front covers of books....again, her facial expressions suggested that she would have never guessed that I was an English Major....

I was PISSED OFF (for a lack of better words) when I recieved the phone call from the library because to charge me and accuse me of destroying a book, is definately a great offense, considering the following reasons I gave above.

The damages they tried to charge me for was soooooooo minute! It was literally a scratch on the top corner of the book cover. I can't believe they would even try charging anyone for that!

In a way, I'm glad that I was the one who received the $19.32 phone call and not some other helpless patron who would have definately been "tricked" into paying the fine. Hopefully, in the future the staff members of that library will find other "past times", while making their comfortable gov't salaries.

"Your dog chewed the book"

AHHHHHHHHHHH! For fuck sakes!!!!! The title above refers to what a Hamilton Public Library staff member said to me on the phone yesterday, shortly after I returned my borrowed library books.

She falsly accused me of my "imaginary" dog chewing one of the books that I returned and now there is $19.32 fine on my library card! I KNOW!....I don't even have a dog....

I shall be walking over to the library shortly to "deal" with the situation. I'll tell you how it all goes down later tonight...it should be interesting!

Degeneration of Love

Everything is fading. Losing its authenticity. Its creative spark. Or maybe it's just me and my perspective on life.

When I hear about friends buying houses, getting married or starting a "career"....I cringe at the thought. I am 22 right now and if I had to be some pregnant, married lady living in the suburbs planting flowers and gossiping about neighbours, as well as dealing with the financial worries of car payments and a mortgage by the time I am 27....then......life reallly does suck-ass!

I don't have a problem with people who are "generally happy" with the lifestyle stated "above." I just have a problem with people who say, "I NEED to be married by 26 and have kids before I'm 30 and live in a two car garage suburbian home with either a Lexus or Mercedes or both on my driveway." My question is - What if you don't really love the person you are dating when you are 26? Do you then just settle with them anyway? Hoping and praying (I'm assuming these individuals are religious) that it will work out? Do you live the next 20 odd years of your life lying to youself? Worse off, lying to the person you are married to? Do you wonder from time to the time all the "what ifs" you didn't fulfill because you HAD TO and DESPERATELY NEEDED to pretend to yourself and most importantly everyone else that your life turned out accordingly to the general public's notion of "normality"?

I personally believe that if I had to live the next 20 years wondering everyday what it should have been or would have been, then life would not be worth living at all.

Love...with a capital "L". Isn't that what people who get married, have kids, etc....are all searching for and believe to have found? At least I hope it is.

But love doesn't come pre-packaged nor does it sit neatly displayed on a shelf with a price tag. It doesn't come with a list of warnings or incentives, rather... I wonder, is it really "Love" that people are seeking these days? Or is it just security? A pay cheque? A nice car? A good fuck? An approval? A competition? A possession?...

Administrative Peeps

I am referring to the hundreds and thousands of administrative peeps that campuses across Canada seem to hire. I don't know about your campus, but mine has particularly given me a hard time. Sometimes I think they go out of their way to find new and innovative ways to piss me off.

The osap office.... 2nd year university.... "Dear, is Elly your 'real' name?... are you sure the name Elly appears on your birth certificate?...were you even born in Canada?....or do you happen to have your birth certificate on you so i can varify it?"

LADY! You are kind of crossing the line here! First of all, do not call me "dear" and who the hell carries their birth certificate in their back pocket?!? (if you do and you are reading this, is that something i should have on me at all times?!?) She didn't just kind of cross the line...she DID cross it...she crossed the "I think I'm going to punch you in the face for suggesting that because I do not have a generic North American name, you are going to make me go back to the gov't office and change the "hyphenated" CHINESE translated into English middle name that I have, just so I can line up for another hour and look you in the face and say, here is my brand new "improved" hyphenated North American-fied name line!!!" Yes, I was pretty pissed off! Btw, if she ever took a look at my birth certificate, it would have a great big British stamp across it!....4 weeks after the incident, I finally received my tuition money from the gov't...a whole $1000.

Fast forward to....today. I am at the Registrar's office because I recieved a letter saying that "You are not eligible for admissions to.....blah blah blah"

I was specifically told that my summer courses would factor into my average, so off I went to the Registrar's office. Who do I encounter? But another lady administrative peep..."Oh, but when you applied, you didn't notify us that you were a M_______ student...it doesn't say on my screen that you ever came to M_______."

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?!?! My reply,"First off, when you saw my application and saw that I have a damn M_______ student number that begins with "03", meaning that I've been at this university since 2003, wouldn't you think that I have taken courses here before?!?!?! Also, what is wrong with M_________ 's technology?!?!?! Shouldn't it all be linked....i.e. one department can type in my name and student number and see the exact same info as another department." I ended up asking my Humanities Department for answers, and guess what, they were actually able to tell me something substantial!

Damn you administrative peeps...you have made my life at university awfully complicated and way more confusing than it should have been... but after 4 yrs or so.... despite all the mix-ups, rude remarks, and suggestively racial comments that I have received... I am still here....knowing that even at my lowest point in university, my life has still been better than yours!

Sex and the City

For all the guys who are going to be reading this...Yes, my first blog entry is going to be about the Sex and the City movie. Why shouldn't it be? I'm a female, who grew up in the city and I have lots of.....................clothes. What did you think I was going to write?!? =P

As I was standing in line for theatre number 10 in Burlington and waiting for its doors to open, I noticed that there was only two types of groups in line for this movie - 1) the group of gfs who made a pact about seeing the movie ever since it was announced on Perez Hilton.com (this group ranged from barely legal 19 yr olds to middle aged women) 2) the girlfriend who somehow managed to drag her boyfriend to see a movie about middle-aged women that have more of a sex drive than any 16 year old teenage boy.

Surprisingly, I didn't notice any gay guys. I guess it's because I watched the movie in the "Suburbs of Burlington." I really should have watched the movie inToronto. Anyways, so group #1 - the group of gfs.

As I sat in the theatre, I noticed that many of the "group of gfs" came walking up the stairs "all dressed up in cocktail dresses/evening dresses/babydoll dresses" (side note: look it up if you don't know what a "babydoll dress" is). After you do so, just imagine girl after girl in their mid-20s coming into the theatre all decked out in their baby doll dresses, clutches, and stilletto heels. I'm pretty sure they were thinking, "OMG, I look sooo POSH tonight!!!" You know what I was thinking?!?! Dressing up to attend the Sex and the City movie is EQUIVALENT to dressing up for a STAR WARS movie as CHEWBACCA or DARTH WADER and your stilletto heels and clutches are comparable to LIGHT SABERS!!!

I would never date a guy who dressed up to attend a Star Wars movie! So guys, NEVER go out with a girl who dresses up to go to a Sex in the City movie! Unless, you are one of those guys who dress up to the Star Wars movies...but group #1 girls never go for the Star Wars dude anyways, so Star Wars dudes...no need to worry!

Just to furthur expand on group #1 - when the pre-credits started, the group of middle aged women who were sitting to the left of me made this particular comment, "Anyone under 30 would not understand this movie!"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Ladies ...you live in the suburbs of Ancaster/Burlington, you are ALL baby mamas, and no offence, but none of you are even close to a size 2...more like a size 12...none of you are remotely attractive nor seem to know how to dress your body shape for that matter. You shop at SHOPPING MALLS! and probably in the discount sections of Reitmans or Suzy Sher. What disgusted me the most was that they howled at every shirtless man that appeared on the screen! These ladies were pretty much comparable to bald, fat middle-aged men who gawk and make sexual comments at young ladies at the bar. It was abosolutely repulsive!

But I would greatly recommend the Sex and the City movie to anyone and everyone. It's worth the $10 price ticket just to see who shows up that night to the theatre!
